The Helgesen/Ceresola crew was three-for-three at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Stakes at the Idaho Horse Park in Nampa, Idaho. Larry Helgesen, of Lodi, California, rode Docs Smokinic to win his first major NRCHA event.
“My nerves were definitely running high,” he admitted after his run. “Luckily, I had my wife, Diana, and two step-daughters here to cheer me on. I’m very excited.”
Helgesen and the 8-year-old gelding marked 202 and 204 in the rein and cow work, respectively. He pocketed $1,350 and a C.R. Morrison trophy for the 406 composite.
“He felt a little strong – he was feeling my nerves. I took a deep breath and trusted him, and he took care of me,” he said modestly.
Just a few hours earlier, Helgesens stepdaughter, Cheyenne Ceresola, rode Docs Smokinic to the Youth Limited Championship, and then his other step-daughter rode the horse in the Youth Bridle, although she won the Youth Bridle Championship on another horse.
Helgesen’s wife, Diana Ceresola, was thrilled with her family’s success. “I couldn’t have planned this to turn out any better. I’m so proud of all of them – they all did wonderful.”
Larry began riding reined cow horses with Diana about a year ago. Before that, he trained and showed high caliber cow dogs. “I told her I would ride cow horses, and she could show cow dogs,” noted Helgesen. “I’m hooked on this now. I’m definitely going to keep showing.”
Douglas Granade rode Just A Plain Spring to the Novice Non Pro Bridle Reserve Championship. The pair marked a 402.5 total, and Granade, of Shingle Springs, California, earned $1,125.
